Charters on the ethical use of AI in higher education
With the AMICAL Consortium – a group of of 28 American‐modeled institutions in 19 different countries across
Europe, Central and Southern Asia, the Middle East and Africa – this project aims at defining a set of charters on the ethical use of AI in higher education.
Each university charter will be distinct, benefiting from on-site knowledge of the best means to support the use of AI within a context that protects students, professors, staff and the larger university community.
In this first phase the Chair has worked at refining the suggested principles for AI in education (originally presented at UNESCO’s Digital Learning Week 2024) that will form the baseline for these charters.
Several UNESCO’s documents have been instrumental for the definition of the basic principles and will guide the development of the charters, including:
- Guidance for generative AI in education and research
- AI and education: guidance for policy-makers
- AI competency frameworks for students
- AI competency frameworks for teachers
Preliminary consultations on the Charters have taken place with Jeff Gima, Director of the AMICAL Consortium, and Rukhsana Zia – Director of the Center of Learning and Teaching at Forman Christian College and Convenor of AMICAL’s Campus-level AI Initiatives Interest Group.
