UNESCO-Uzbekistan Beruniy Prize for Scientific Research on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence
Professors Roda and Perry were jointly awarded, by UNESCO Director General, the UNESCO-Uzbekistan Beruniy Prize for Scientific Research on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. The awarding of the Prize recognizes their “outstanding joint contribution to advancing research, international cooperation, and practical applications in the field of ethics of artificial intelligence.”
The award ceremony took place on 6 November 2025, at an official side event of the 43rd session of the General Conference of UNESCO, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Professors Perry and Roda were nominated by Phyllis R. Magrab, Ph.D. Endowed Professor, Pediatrics, UNESCO Chair, and Senior Advisor, Global Health Institute of Georgetown University. Professor Magrab highlighted how professors Roda’s and Perry’s book Digital Tightrope: Human Rights and Digital Technology, published in 2017, “was the first scholarly work to directly address the intersection of human rights law and digital technology. Their research has demonstrated exceptional foresight
and expertise in the field we now recognize as artificial intelligence ethics.”
